Celebrating a marriage ceremony with cake is a custom that goes back to at least the Ancient Romans when a barley cake was broken over the bride’s head to bring good luck to the couple. The recipe for Bride’s Pye, printed in 1685, was elaborately decorated and filled with oysters, pine kernels, cockscombs, sweetbreads, and spices.
Fruit cakes, symbols of fertility and prosperity, became common in the 17th century but it was Queen Victoria's wedding to Prince Albert in 1840 that set a new standard for wedding cakes when the enormous English plum cake was ornately decorated in white icing.
